Q and A with Cali Groms: Part 1 Collin Goddard and Cody Cook go to INDO!

The amount of new upcoming talent coming from California is high right now. A good majority of the kids are focused, amped, and working to save money so they can travel and get some of the best waves of there lives! I will be interviewing some of the groms who have been killing it lately. The first installment of this on my blog is on Cody Cook and Collin Goddard who took a trip together to Indonesia for a month and scored!

I first met Collin just as a mini grom doing the BIA contest. Every time I see him in the water he just keeps getting better and better. He is one of the more focused kids that I have seen and has super supportive parents especially his dad. Keep your eyes out for Collin!

Collin Goddard cruising in Indo

One memory that I have of Cody that always stands out is when he came to my home spot. The waves were sick and he had a brand new double stringer board that was extremely stiff. He wasn't to amped on it and I thought it was a horrible idea to use in the type of waves that were offered that day. He still managed to scrap a inside wave that gave him the sickes ramp that he busted a HUGE backflip out of! I was really impressed with his timing and style. On top of that he is a cruiser and usually pretty pumped to get in the water.

How old are you?
19

Where are you from and where do you usually boogie?
I'm from Laguna Niguel, California and my homebreak is Salt Creek.

Was Indo your first time out of the country? If so what did you think about the place?
This was my second time going to Indonesia and the people living there are some of the nicest you'll ever meet.

How long was your trip for? Did you feel it was to short or to long of a trip or just right?
We were there for a month and I feel like that was the perfect amount of time to be there. It was long enough to guarantee waves and short enough so we didn't have to get a new visa.

What was the best part of your trip?
My favorite part of the trip was playing chess with the local kids while we were staying on Desert Point. The kids surf and play chess every day and they're really good. I beat a nine year old one game and I was claiming haha.

What was the food like? Did you try anything new that you haven’t eaten before?
Nasi Gorang and Mi Gorang. AKA fried rice and fried noodles. Probably ate that every day. The highlight though were the 25 cent ice cream cones from McDonalds. We became addicted to those things pretty quickly. I don't think they regulate the nicotine levels in their ice cream over there. haha

Where would you like to go on your next bodyboard trip?
Somewhere in the South Pacific.

Are you two going to keep traveling together?
I would imagine so. Collin is always keen to surf no matter what the conditions are like. That's cool to see.

Any last words, shout outs or encouragement to all the young kids coming up?
I would like to thank everybody at Surfing The Nations for making the trip worth while, espeacially Mike Slagter who takes amazing photographs. I would also like to thank my sponsors 662mob board shops and Ally Swimfins. For the next generation of kids coming up I would just say have fun out in the water and don't take it too seriously.

Cody taking a big leap!

Good way to end an epic trip
